Jonathan Evans to fight Cardiff North seat
Jonathan Evans has been selected to fight the highly marginal
seat of Cardiff North at the next general election.
He comfortably defeated his only remaining rival, businesswoman
and Herefordshire councillor Kay Swinburne, in an “open primary”
contest on Thursday 30 August.
Under new procedures introduced by David Cameron, all registered
electors living in Cardiff North were entitled to vote in the selection
contest.
Mr Evans, a former Minister who was MP for Brecon and Radnor from
1992 to 1997, has been an MEP since 1999. Cardiff North is held
by Julie Morgan, Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan's wife, by
a slender
Labour majority of just over 1000.
But the seat was won for the Conservatives in this year’s
National Assembly election by Tory AM Jonathan Morgan with a majority
of 4,844.
Mr Evans said:“I’m delighted and very honoured to have
been given the opportunity to seek election as MP for the part of
Wales I know the best.
“It’s where I went to school and spent most of my career
as a lawyer before being elected to Parliament in 1992.”
