Barroso Buckles Under Pressure
Jose Manuel Barroso has today withdrawn
his proposed Commission in the face of potential defeat during the
vote in the European Parliament.
The President of the Commission designate will
now bring forward a new proposal following further consultations
with the political groups in the European Parliament and the European
Council.
Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said: "Mr Barroso should have stood
firm in the face of this left wing whitchunt. By giving into the
Socialists we are now stuck with Neil Kinnock and the rest of the
failed Prodi Commission. We will closely examine Mr Barroso's new
proposals to see there is evidence of him giving ground to the Communists,
Greens and Socialists. At present he cannot necessarily rely on
the support of British Conservatives."
