More U-turns?
Western Mail
by Duncan Higgitt
TORY Welsh MEP Jonathan Evans mocked the
Prime Minister's U-turn on a European referendum, as he accused
Labour Euro MPs of undermining government policies.
The Conservative group leader in the European
Parliament has written to Europe Minister Denis McShane after Labour
MEPs this week voted against Prime Minister Tony Blair's bid to
cap European Union spending.
As the row over Europe stepped up, Mr Evans claimed
Labour MEPs have in the past voted in defiance of the Prime Minister's
wishes – including a vote in favour of a referendum on the
European Constitution as far back as October 2000.
In his letter Mr Evans said, "When will you
rein in your MEPs and tell them to stop voting with their socialist
colleagues against Britain's interests?"
And, mocking the Prime Minister's U-turn on the
European referendum, he added, "What other U-turns are planned?
Will the Government carry out a U-turn and support a larger increase
in Britain's contributions to the EU of more than 1% of GDP, as
Labour MEPs are demanding?"
