Mandelson – Blair's man in Brussels

Following the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain's new European Commissioner, Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, said:

"Peter Mandelson will be Tony Blair's man in Brussels, not Britain's man. Britain needs someone who will promote the national interest, not someone who is just seen as Blair's bag carrier.

"The Prime Minister's stock has never been lower in Europe and this will mean Mandelson will have little credibility in the Commission and Parliament.

"Even in the Labour Party, this man has little support, and it is difficult to see how he can successfully defend Britain's interests."
