Conservative MEPs Keep Up Eurostat Pressure
On Commission
On Thursday this week, the European Parliament
adopted a motion for a resolution critical of the European Commission
on its handling of the Eurostat fraud scandal. Conservative MEPs
took the initiative this week in pressing for a clear and unambiguous
statement from Parliament detailing the failures of the Commission
properly to allocate responsibility for the Eurostat affair.
Conservative MEPs secured the backing of the 232-strong
majority EPP-ED Group for this motion, which Parliament then supported
in the plenary vote.
Commenting on the success of the motion, Jonathan
Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament,
said:"Our success in driving through this motion underlines
the determination of Conservative MEPs to hold the Commission to
account for its failures over the Eurostat fraud affair. We have
been relentless throughout this Parliament in exposing cases of
fraud and maladministration and will continue to be in the vanguard
of calls for reform. The British people can be sure that Conservative
MEPs will keep up the pressure on this and other fraud cases."
