Barroso Approved as New Commission President
Former Portuguese Prime Minister Jose
Manuel Durao Barroso has today been approved as the new European
Commission President.
The newly elected European Parliament approved
his appointment in Strasbourg today following his nomination by
European Leaders last month in Brussels.
Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said: "Mr Barroso has a proven
track record as a reforming Prime Minister at home, a free marketer
and a true Atlanticist. We support more open and constructive dialogue
across the Atlantic, unhindered by anti-American rhetoric, some
of which, sadly, we hear too often within the EU.
"I hope that the President will be bold in
reforming the Commission and its workings in a manner that genuinely
meets the expectations of Europe. The President must make tackling
fraud, waste and maladministration a priority of his term of office."
