Berlaymont – the lasting monument to
Neil Kinnock
Romano Prodi and Neil Kinnock are expected
to attend the opening of the European Commission's new HQ tomorrow
which has been beset with problems since the early 1990s.
Speaking ahead of the official opening of the
Berlaymont building, Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said:"No-one ever seems to have
taken a grip on this issue, and as a result, this building has cost
taxpayers across Europe over six hundred million pounds.
No-one can explain why it took four years to actually start removing
the asbestos after it was discovered, or why it took another nine
years to reopen the building.
It sums up the problems with the current set-up
- millions and millions of pounds spent on a grandiose building
that has sat empty for 13 years.
Neil Kinnock was supposed to have been in charge
of this project and this vast building will sit there as his lasting
monument."
