New Pact proposals a pretence of being tough
Speaking ahead of the debate about the changes
to the Growth and Stability Pact, Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of
the Conservatives in the European Parliament, said:
"The new guidelines announced last week merely
buried the Growth and Stability Pact while pretending to give it
new life. The toughest sanctions will now be peer pressure, so we
are, I am afraid, back in the situation where breaches of the pact
will be traded off against other political demands.
"The Commission has criticised small countries
breaking the pact in the past, but the moment countries like Germany
and France break their pledges, the goal posts are moved.
"These new proposals are just about letting
Germany and France off the hook, while pretending to be coming down
hard on them."
