Parliament's Conference of Presidents closes
ranks to protect Kovacs
The European Parliament's Conference of
Presidents is believed to have banned indicative votes by Committees
in the Commissioner Hearings in Strasbourg next week.
During the original hearings, individual Committees
held indicative votes on the Commissioner Designate they had cross-examined.
Measures are now being taken to stop this from happening again.
Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said:
"If this decision has been taken by the Conference of Presidents,
it is an extraordinary one.
Having gloated over the European Parliament gaining power to express
a view, the Conference of Presidents now appears to be closing ranks
to protect a controversial former communist, Làszló
Kovacs."
