Is Tony Blair Stitching Up A Deal Over Constitution?
As Tony Blair prepares to meet with the
Irish Prime Minister tomorrow, Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the
British Conservatives in the European Parliament, said the Prime
Minister should come clean over any deals being made over the EU
Constitution.
Media reports have suggested that the Spanish,
German and Polish Governments may be shifting their positions on
the crucial issue of voting strengths. The British press report
that Mr Blair and Mr Berlusconi have written a joint letter to the
Irish Government asking it to 'push ahead' with the Constitution.
The letter also reportedly says that the two leaders believe that
'only a few questions remain unanswered'.
Today in the European Parliament, the Council
and Commission will make statements on preparations for the Council
Summit. Jonathan Evans said: "People in Britain are opposed
to the EU Constitution. Now it appears that Tony Blair and other
Governments are trying to cobble together a squalid deal behind
closed doors.
"If the Prime Minister has carved-up a secret
back-room deal on the Constitution this will further undermine people's
trust in him on this issue, as on so many others. The British people
need some answers. They deserve to know what the Government is doing
in their name."
