Mandelson falls at first hurdle
The European Parliament today began the
process of verifying Peter Mandelson's nomination as Britain's Commissioner
in Brussels.
From the outset, Mr Mandelson ducked the issue
of the UK Rebate following questioning from Robert Sturdy MEP, Conservative
International Trade Spokesman in the European Parliament.
Questioned on his views on keeping the UK Rebate,
Mr Mandelson responded by saying: "My view is that this issue
must be resolved. The rebate seems fair, very fair to the UK and
the Commission has made some interesting proposals that would reduce
the rebate. I hope you will not mind if I reserve my position on
this matter, and I'm sure the British Government will make a strong
case."
He later added: "I give my allegiance chiefly
to Mr Barrosso."
Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said: "This was the perfect opportunity
for Mr Mandelson to demonstrate his willingness to stand up for
British interests in Brussels. The UK Rebate is a significant and
just element of British contributions to the EU.
Chris Patten and Neil Kinnock, Britain's previous
Commissioners, strongly opposed moves to scrap Mrs Thatcher's hard-fought
rebate. Mr Mandelson has today failed to stand up for Britain and
British taxpayers."
