Breakthrough in barmy EU ruling
Wales on Sunday
THE Tory leader in the European Parliament
yesterday welcomed a breakthrough over barmy new EC rules which
could have meant putting signs on Snowdon to warn climbers they're
'high up'.
The new 'working at height' laws are meant to
regulate safety in industries such as construction.
Jonathan Evans, a Welsh MEP, said the breakthrough came after talks
in Brussels between senior Health & Safety Executive officials
and mountaineering representatives.
He said: "The Government had argued that
the rules and regulations must be enforced, the effect of which
would have been to require signs on the peak of Snowdon warning
mountaineering instructors that they were working at height.
"Everyone agreed that this would be madness,
but that's what the rules literally require."
